| Sports Cards Collecting - Article 2 - Selecting your Favorite Players to collect is very Important ! |
|
Now that you have decided to start your sports Cards Collecting Hobby it is very important to choose: 1)Your favorite Sport(s), 2)Your favorite Teams(s) and 3) Your favorite Player(s).
|
I would highly recommend that initially you start with One Sport, One Team, and no more than Two Players. I say that because you will find that too Many and too Much can become Too Expensive Too Quickly! Remember as I stated in my first article that you should set a budget and stick to it.
Let's say you choose to collect Baseball Cards. You may have your own choices already selected but if you do not ask yourself who are my favorite players? If I live in New York I might select Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez, but if I live in the Western US I might select Manny Ramirez or Eric Chavez while yet in the MidWest it could be Albert Pujhols or CC Sabatha. Some of you may even choose to collect older and more vintage players but just remember that their cost will be considerably more. Mickey Mantle, Jackie Robinson, Willie Mays and most other older Hall of Famers are very expensive.
My personal choices for starting a collection would be Derek Jeter or Alex Rodriguez along with Albert Pujhols. That way you would have a young and proven player from both the American and National Leagues. Both A Rod and Pujhols are on a long term Home Run Pace and either could possibly set new Home Run Records within the next Ten Years if they remain Healthy. Better yet, their basic cards are still affordable and in supply. Their "Rookie Cards" cost quite a bit more but as you become a more experienced collector you can even expect to find them even affordable at various times.
Local card shops, card shows and online auctions are great places to find your cards. Some shops even have trade nights and are willing to look at what you might have available for trading. Just remember that shop keepers have operating expenses and usually will not be able to trade for the full book value of your cards. Expect while trading to receive no more than 30 to 50 per-cent of your card values in trading unless you have a very "HOT" player card! On the other hand you can trade with other collectors and come out much better!
Study your cards. Learn the player stats! Batting Average, Number of Hits and Extra Base Hits. Learn where your player was born, when he was born and his unique information sometimes found on the card! Most Important is to always remember that you must always keep your cards in excellent condition. Otherwise their value will not be much. Store them in binders and in special pages which are designed to hold trading cards. Binders usually can be found for around $5.00 and pages for them cost about 25 cents each. You should be able to store 100 cards in pages inside a nice binder for about $8 to $10 not including the cost of the cards.
Enjoy your collecting and tune us in on this site next month when we will discuss the various types of special collectible trading cards available for your collections. Until then please remember that "Everyday is a Great Day for Sports". Thanks for reading and may God Bless. The Sports Professor.
